Abstract

The heart of the system utilized by the US Patent and Trademark Office for the storage and retrieval of technical information is a hierarchical scheme for the classification of patents based on the technical subject matter disclosed in them. Multiple copies of patents are stored in the system according to their classifications, and technical information is retrieved from the system be delineating fields of search in terms of classifications most apt to include all disclosures relevant to the subject matter to be retrieved.
