Patents and the engineer

Henri J. Nussbaumer IBM (France)

Abstract

Technology-based companies are heavily dependent upon patents for protection of their research and development (R&D) investment. The interaction of engineers and scientists with the patent system in large R&D organizations is analyzed and factors influencing motivation and creativity are considered. Suggestions are made to improve communication with patent attorneys and to enhance creativity.
