Language and ergonomics

Abstract

The instructions for operating or maintaining a machine may be just as important for the user as the design of the machine itself. One way of phrasing an instruction may be successful, and another not. A number of suggestions on the best way to word instructions can be found in experiments which compare different grammatical forms.
