John Downing University of Victoria

Abstract

have the same concepts of language as adults. But do young children understand such categories as sound, word, letter, sentence, when teachers use them in talking about language? If not, what are the stages in the development of such linguistic concepts in children's thinking? What practical help can teachers give to develop their pupils' understanding of such concepts? These are the problems to be discussed in this article.
