A number of research-based guidelines for incorporating instructional diagrams into documentation are discussed. A survey that was conducted to determine the extent to which existing computer-aided-design (CAD) documentation follows these guidelines is described. The results of the survey indicate that diagrams in CAD documentation do not, for the most part, follow the guidelines.
