Future technology, not too difficult to conceive, could radically change the existing roles of author, editor, publisher, and user of original scientific material. These roles are projected beyond electronic photocomposition and significant effects are visualized in the areas of information handling and quality control. However, economics may determine that scientific publishing will be an auxiliary use of technology installed for functions more measurable than the value of information.
