Abstract
In recent years it has become almost normal for politicians to overtly and routinely lie. How should educators respond? Students should explore post-truth politics, develop research skills, and practice inquirybased factual writing, but they need more than literacy skills. Liberal education prepares them to be active, ethical participants in democracy.

Abstract
Empathy is a much-discussed term in the humanities these days. While some critics value it and argue that literature desirably promotes it, other critics worry that appeals to this emotion will neglect important matters of social context. In the literature classroom, the best approach is to take time to consider how texts complicate the impulse to empathize.

Abstract
Increasingly, autistic students are attending college, posing new challenges to writing instructors. In particular, such students may have trouble imagining readers’ responses to their texts. Developing an appropriate pedagogy for these students may involve revisiting composition studies’ tradition of cognitive research, while not abandoning more recent constructivist theories.
